Josh Stephens: Are virtual network devices creeping into your network?
Virtualization technologies have dramatically changed the way that we think
about servers and computing resources in general; this is common knowledge among
most technologists and especially with system administrators. However, many
engineers fail to realize that these technologies have also created significant
changes to our networks.

IBM's top network exec talks strategy
IBM reversed course on networking in 2010 when it acquired Blade Network
Technologies, one of its key network suppliers. Network World Editor in Chief
John Dix and Managing Editor Jim Duffy recently caught up with Vikram Mehta,
founder of BNT and now vice president of IBM System Networking, for an update on
IBM's network visions going forward. Insider (registration required)

and other sensitive Internet transactions is not as secure as assumed, according
to a team cryptanalysts.

Leigh Jasper: FTP is not collaboration and never will be
Many companies claim they are using FTP for collaboration. Yes, it's true. Some
companies do claim this. But I say that whatever it is they are doing, it's not
true collaboration. Here's why.

F5 gear bought to optimize WAN also helps with VDI
Distribution Management Inc. bought F5's Big-IP Gateway to handle WAN
optimization, but it turns out the platform solved a string of problems that
cropped up when the company deployed VMware virtual desktop infrastructure, too.

In-flight Wi-Fi, missing science and a survey
At first blush, it's another one of those, "Sure, it will happen ...
eventually, " type of situations. I mean does anyone envision a commercial air
fleet without readily available Internet service 20 years down the runway?

IPv6: Dual-stack strategy starts at the perimeter
We are in an awkward point in the history of the Internet. IPv4 address
depletion has occurred yet we expect to use IPv4 for the next 15 to 20 years.
Organizations see two paths to choose between in the years ahead. Insider

IPv6 deployment starts at the network edge
IT execs know they will have to deploy IPv6 at some point, but where to begin?
One approach that establishes some IPv6 capability without spending a lot of
time or money is to start at the perimeter. Insider (registration
